This Date in History: 1909 – Birth of the Habs

The Club de Hockey Canadien (that’s what the CH in the logo stands for) was founded by J. Ambrose O’Brien, a businessman, with the help of T.C. Hare. The National Hockey Association was formed in Montreal and was the forerunner of the National Hockey League (NHL) today. Charter members included the Montreal Wanderers, Renfrew Creamery Kings and Montreal Canadiens. 99 years on, they have become the most storied franchise in sports history, winning 24 Stanley Cups in 99 seasons of hockey.

This is a video of the road to winning their last Stanley Cup in 1993.

After a long 15-year drought, will this season, the 100th one, bring a 25th Stanley Cup back to the birthplace of league hockey? Only time will tell…
