Packing, packing, packing…

I’ve been really busy packing up to move over to my residence in Montreal tomorrow. My stuff seem to have more then doubled since i moved over. I’ve been buying lots of stuff that i need for the past few days, like washing powder, cutlery, pots & pans, table lamp etc. Have to try to squeeze everything into my dad’s car and then me and my dad will make a 6 hour drive over to Montreal.

From weather information on the net, it’s -3 degrees Celsius there and there’s light snow. Quite a few degrees colder then over here at Toronto. Probably wont get to see snow though as the forecast is a sunny 5 degrees tomorrow.

The perils of being tall

The room that my dad rents in Toronto where i’m currently staying at belong to a house whose owner has a two year old kid. She’s at the stage at which she is extremely cute. Somehow she seems to quite like me, always running towards me and hugging my legs. Once, i decided to make it a bit more exciting for her, so while she ran towards me, I picked her up and swung her into the air, arms fully extended, when suddenly…

…’kok’, her head came into contact with the ceiling! Luckily it wasnt too hard and knock and she just laughed it off. The worse thing is to have in your hands a crying kid, especially when you’re the reason for the crying.

Oh well, from now onwards i have to be more careful when playing with little kids…haha…

Montreal!

Just came back from visiting McGill university in Montreal. Takes about 6 hrs to drive there so me and my dad spent a night there in an old rundown motel. Its a very interesting city, with a distinct european style (more specifically French). Very much different from Toronto, like a European city in the midst of America.

The biggest difference is of course the change from English to French as the main language there. Even all the road signs and advertisement billboards are in French. I guess I really need to brush up on my French. Most people outside of my university speak French too.

It’s quite strange coz my university is situated right in the middle of downtown Montreal so within the campus, everyone speaks English but once you step out, everyone is speaking French. It’s almost like being teleported from one place to another.

Interesting things…

…I noticed about cars in Canada.

– An overwhelming majority of cars are Jap cars. Everywhere you’ll see Toyotas, Hondas, Mazdas, Lexus, Acura etc. but u will seldom see American cars on the roads. Goes to show how much trouble GM and Ford are in now.

– Canada has no car manufacturer of itself. All its cars are brands from other countries though they might be manufactured in Canada.

– No matter how good / expensive / high-end the cars are, most people don’t seem to bother with washing them. Maybe its because its the winter and no one wants to spend half an hour standing outside in the freezing cold splashing water. Or maybe it’s just that nobody cares. Heard that a car wash in Canada costs about 8 or 9 bucks. Some of the cars are so dirty that you almost can’t see the original colors in which they came in.

Arghh…

Online registration for courses at McGill is taking forever…

Edit: Turns out that the problem is with my internet connection. After it was fixed, things sped up and every thing’s fine now.

Welcome to Canada!

Just arrived in Canada two nights ago at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport. I’m still trying to adjust to the time difference between Singapore and Toronto, which have a 13-hour difference. Feeling tired and hungry at all the wrong times. Will probably take another day or two to get used to things.

Anyway yesterday went to downtown Canada to visit University of Toronto and also walk around the main business district. The buildings there are very impressive, seemingly more so then those in Singapore’s CBD.

Went to Niagara Falls today. Looks really spectacular except that most of the view was blocked by the mist thrown up by the water.

Will post more pictures when i have time…
